Umm Al Quwain: the quiet emirate of lagoons and where to buy
- Ruling family
- Al Mualla
- Area
- ≈ 777 km²
- Part of the UAE since
- 1971
The calmest and least populated emirate, with mangrove lagoons. The market is still forming, and large developers have arrived.
History
The town was founded in the late 18th century and the Al Mualla family has ruled the emirate since. People lived on fishing and pearling. Excavations at Ed-Dur show that a large trading port stood on this coast in classical antiquity. In 1971 the emirate joined the UAE.
Umm Al Quwain today
A small population, fishing, light industry and weekend tourism — beaches, lagoons and a water park. The emirate is about an hour's drive from Dubai.
Where to buy
A new resort island in the mangrove lagoons — Siniya Island. A waterfront and marina — UAQ Marina. A large master community — Al Salam City. It is a bet on the emirate's growth: prices are low, but liquidity is still limited.
Rules for foreign buyers
Foreigners can buy in designated zones and approved projects. Check the type of title, the project's status and escrow before booking.
